Order bumps and upsells, explained without the hype

Order bumps and upsells have a bad reputation, and some of it is deserved. Everyone has bought a cheap product and then been dragged through ten pages of offers they never asked for.

Done properly, they are the opposite. They are a way of offering the people who just said yes the next sensible step, at the moment they are most interested.

The difference between a bump and an upsell

1. The order bump

A small add on with a tick box on the checkout page. It is related to the main product and priced so it is an easy extra, like a template pack that goes with a guide. One click, no extra form.

2. The upsell

A one time offer on the page after checkout. It takes the buyer further, faster, often with something done for them. If they say no, they go straight to their purchase. If it suits them, one click adds it to the order.

"The best upsell is the next thing your buyer was going to need anyway."

How to keep it honest

Show every price up front. Keep the number of offers small. Make sure each one is genuinely useful on its own. And make it easy to say no, because a buyer who feels tricked asks for a refund and never buys again.

Every product in AI Franchise ships with its bumps, upsells and thank you page already written and wired into the checkout. The AI order bump and upsell builder can draft new ones for your own products too, with the maths for three different scenarios so you can see what each offer does to your average order.
